Silver Jewellery Repair & Resizing: What to Know

Written by Darshan Jain, Founder of Arumayi
A broken clasp or a ring that no longer fits doesn't always mean replacing the piece. A fair amount of silver jewellery can be repaired or resized, though not everything, and it helps to know the difference before you assume a favourite piece is beyond saving.
What Can Usually Be Fixed
Simple ring resizing — making a band slightly bigger or smaller — is one of the most common and straightforward repairs, provided the design allows for it. Broken clasps on necklaces and bracelets, snapped chain links, and loose earring backs are also generally fixable without much difficulty. Bent bands and simple structural issues can often be corrected too.
What's Harder or Not Possible
Rings with stones set very close to the band, or intricate filigree designs, can be trickier to resize without risking damage to the detailing. Heavily oxidised pieces sometimes lose their finish during repair work and may need re-oxidising afterward, which can slightly change the original look. If a piece is very thin or delicate, ask before assuming a repair is possible — sometimes it genuinely isn't.
What to Expect From the Process
Bring the piece to our Sikar store, or reach out on WhatsApp with a photo and a description of the issue, and our team will tell you honestly whether it's fixable and what it will involve. We'd rather tell you a repair isn't worth doing than take your money for something that won't hold up. Turnaround time depends on the complexity of the job.
Preventing the Need for Repairs
A lot of repairs are avoidable with basic care — removing rings before heavy activity, storing chains separately so they don't tangle and stress the links, and not forcing a tight ring on or off. Our guide on how to store silver jewellery covers habits that reduce wear and tear over time.
FAQs
Can any silver ring be resized?
Most simple band designs can be resized, but rings with intricate detailing or stones close to the band may be more limited — ask before assuming either way.
Do you repair jewellery not originally bought from Arumayi?
Bring it in or send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll let you know honestly whether we can help.
How long does a repair usually take?
It depends on the complexity of the issue — our team will give you a realistic timeline when you bring the piece in.
Is repair cheaper than buying new?
Usually yes for simple fixes like clasps or resizing, though very damaged pieces may be more practical to replace — we'll tell you honestly which makes more sense.
